BACKGROUND

With rapid urbanization and increasing vehicle ownership, Asian cities are grappling with air pollution, which is impacting the quality of life and public health of citizens. The ongoing transition towards electric mobility in a few countries has been instrumental in reducing emissions from the transport sector. The public transit sector in a few countries like India, Singapore, Nepal, Lao PDR, Indonesia etc. is moving ahead with landmark developments, but a significant gap still remains in the private sector. This is mostly attributed to challenges such as the exclusion of private operators from national subsidy frameworks, with access to adequate finance being a primary barrier to the transition towards electric buses by private operators.

Discussions during the webinar will help understand the steps being undertaken by the government sector in Nepal and Lao PDR to support the transition towards private e-buses. The conversations will also aim to facilitate cross-country and regional peer learning by identifying successful business models, policy tools and implementation lessons that may be adaptable across borders. In addition, the webinar will also highlight the experience of multilateral organisations in supporting private e-bus procurement across Asia, including pilot implementation, roadmaps, strategies to address high costs, institutional capacity, and relevant business models.
